Presuming you already know the basics, let’s answer some popular questions about beds.

Frequently asked questions about beds – answered

What are the different types of beds?

The most popular types of beds include:
  • storage beds (ottoman bed or divan beds with storage)
  • TV beds
  • guest beds

What is the best bed size for couples?

For couples the minimum bed width allowing good sleep (without disturbing the partner too much) is 135 cm, but a wider bed would be more comfortable. A bed for a couple should be large enough so you don’t disturb your partner – you should be able to lie side by side with your arms behind your head and your elbows out without touching.

In this article I cover the standard UK bed sizes, so you can check what dimensions the most popular beds, like double or king size, have:

Is it better to have a hard or soft bed?

Whether it’s better to have a hard or soft bed, depends on your body weight. Heavier people usually prefer firmer mattresses, while lighter people feel more comfortable on medium or soft mattresses. Why? It’s because the mattress needs to provide adequate support for your weight. The more weight, the more you sink in, and the more support you need.

Is a quilted or turfed mattress better?

It depends on what you need. Here I explain the difference between quilted and tufed mattress:

Quilting vs turfing
What is quilting?

Quilting is a way of attaching the outer fabric to the surface fillings of the mattress. Quilted mattresses have a smoother, flatter surface as well as the attractive decorative look of the quilting pattern.

What is turfing?

Tufting is a type of mattress construction where tapes go right through the mattress and are secured on each side by tags or washers. This prevents the loose mattress fillings from being dislocated.

What type of bed is the most sturdy?

Beds with metal frames are generally speaking more sturdy, stronger and durable when compared to wooden frames. Most metal frames can also support more weight.

What material is best in bed?

The best bedding materials include:
  • Cotton – soft, durable
  • Silk – feels luxurious, delicate
  • Linen – very durable, cooling, may be hard at the beginning, but gets softer over time
  • Bamboo – soft and durable

What is the healthiest fabric to sleep in?

The healthiest fabric to sleep in is pure cotton. 100% natural cotton fabric is best for sheets and pyjamas as it is soft, smooth, lightweight and it’s a budget-friendly option too.

What is the comfiest material for bedding?

Egyptian cotton is the comfiest bedding material. Why? It has the longest fibre which makes it very soft and pleasant.

Why are lower beds better?

Generally, lower beds are better. Why? Lower beds make you feel more cosy, as you are close to the ground and it feels more natural. Sleeping lower also keeps you cooler, which improves your sleep quality. The ideal bed height should be around the same as your knee level or slightly lower. This way it is not too low to be difficult to raise from the bed.

Is a higher or lower bed better?

As I explained above, lower beds are better to sleep in. But you may also want to consider other aspects such as underbed storage and visual aspects.

Higher beds are better if you need to use the storage space underneath.

Lower beds are better if you have a small room – they will look lighter and won’t clutter the room.

Is it better to have a big bed or a small bed?

The general rule about the bed size is: the bigger the better. If you only have space for that, it’s better to have a big bed. Always go for the biggest bed you can fit in your room!

Do beds get harder or softer over time?

Bed mattresses get softer over time. A brand new mattress will often be firmer before it breaks in.

Why are hotel beds so much more comfortable?

Hotel beds are so comfortable because they have mattress toppers.

What is a mattress topper?

A mattress topper is a layer of cushioning on top of the mattress providing extra support and comfort.

Do older people need a softer bed?

Generally speaking, older people need a medium to medium firm mattress. This type of mattress provides optimum spine support and helps to alleviate back or joint pain.

What type of bed is the quietest?

Solid wood and solid metal platform beds are the quietest. Generally, beds with no springs but with foam mattresses, and beds with no loose slates or other moving parts won’t squeak and will make less noise.

Are thicker beds better?

Yes, thicker bed mattresses are better. The minimum mattress thickness to provide sufficient support is around 25 cm (10 inches). However, if you are a side sleeper, you need more cushioning and a thicker mattress you will find more comfortable – 30 cm (12 inches) or more.

Which type of bed is more durable? What type of beds last the longest?

The most durable mattress material is natural latex, it should last 12 – 15 years. Beds with latex mattresses usually last the longest, while traditional innerspring beds generally have the shortest lifespan.
